Marsha Firestone, Ph.D., president and founder of the Women Presidents’ Organization and Women Presidents’ Educational Organization, received a 2007 New York Women’s Agenda Star Award at the New York Women’s Agenda Annual Star Breakfast. The event held in New York City honors outstanding women who represent the spirit of New York, provide leadership in business and in the community, and are role models for other women. The Home Depot adds woman to board

The world’s largest home improvement retailer, The Home Depot, has appointed three new members to its board of directors, including one female, Karen Katen. The other new members are F. Duane Ackerman and Ari Bousbib. These appointments are a part of the company’s planned succession process to replace four existing board members, John L. Clendenin, Claudio X. Gonzales, Milledge A. Hart III and Kenneth G. Langone, who are scheduled to retire from the board in May 2008.

Katen currently serves as chairman of the Pfizer Foundation, and recently retired as vice chairman of Pfizer Inc. and as president of Pfizer Human Health, the company’s principal operating group. Katen joined Pfizer in 1974 and has held numerous leadership roles within the organization until her retirement earlier this year. In 1993, she was named executive vice president of Pfizer U.S. Pharmaceuticals and she was promoted to president of that same business unit in 1995. During 2001, she was named president of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Group, the global pharmaceutical unit of Pfizer, and was elected executive vice president of Pfizer. She was elected vice chairman of Pfizer in 2005. With this recent announcement, The Home Depot’s board currently consists of 14 members, with 13 of them being outside directors.

Center for Women’s Business Research names new board members

Dr. Candida Brush, Dr. Jana Matthews and Emily Stone were recently elected to the board of The Center for Women’s Business Research. Their threeyear term began as of Jan.1.

Brush, a professor, holds the president’s chair in entrepreneurship at Babson College in Babson Park, Mass. Matthews is founder and CEO of The Jana Matthews Group, a Boulder, Colo., company that offers leadership consulting. Stone is founder and president of Stone Group, a New York-based provider of strategic business and licensing services to fashion and consumer products companies.

Standard for the 2008 Jetta is the economical, yet powerful, 2.5- liter five-cylinder engine that now delivers 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, compared to the previous generation that delivered 150 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. Mated to the standard five-speed manual transmission or the available six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® and sport mode, the Jetta delivers on performance and efficiency.

The new E320 BLUETEC — distinguished as “2007 World Green Car” by an international panel of journalists earlier this year — can go nearly 700 highway miles on a single tank of fuel.

BLUETEC denotes a state-of-the-art engine and exhaust technology, which produces the cleanest diesels available on the market today. BLUETEC diesel is able to provide the powerful torque (210 horsepower,388 pound-feet for the E320) of a large V-8 engine with the low fuel consumption of a four-cylinder compact. Combining several technologies to minimize diesel exhaust emissions, The E320 BLUETEC five-passenger sedan starts with a purpose-built 3.0- liter V-6 diesel engine that includes four valves per cylinder, centrally located piezo-electric injectors, third-generation CDI (commonrail direct injection), a turbocharger with variable nozzle turbine and exhaust gas recirculation. This technology is made possible with the use of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel (less than 15 parts per million) that became available in the United States in 2006.
